U.S. DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS
OFFICE OF INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Personal Pronoun Initiative

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is championing inclusivity by allowing personal pronouns in digital display names. Led by Assistant Secretary for Information and Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO) Kurt DelBene, this initiative aims to create a respectful and inclusive environment for VA employees.

In collaboration with VA Secretary Denis McDonough's vision for a more inclusive government, the VA Office of Information and Technology (OIT) established the Personal Pronoun team. They developed a user-friendly process for adding personal pronouns to digital display names.

Over 23,500 staff members and contractors have embraced this opportunity to include personal pronouns in their displays. This initiative showcases VA's commitment to diversity and inclusion, setting them apart as a federal agency.

By fostering an expectation of inclusivity, VA reduces the burden on individuals and cultivates a supportive environment for the LGBTQ+ community. These achievements have a profound impact on VA employees and the public alike. With over 13,000 LGBTQ+ employees at VA, the organization's alignment with inclusive policies enhances job satisfaction, productivity, and morale.

Through this initiative, VA serves as a role model for other federal agencies, showcasing how technology can foster an inclusive culture. By embracing diverse perspectives and talents, VA enhances the experiences of its employees and ensures that the more than 5.42 million Veterans receiving health and benefits from VA are treated with openness and respect.
