The federal consortium's overhaul of Recreation.gov has revolutionized citizen services, providing significant benefits to the public. The website's redevelopment addressed previous issues, such as difficulties in finding information, by implementing new navigation elements. This resulted in a 30% increase in conversion rates for customers using the improved navigation.
Loading times for reservations were also dramatically improved. The contractor teams optimized the presentation of information on-screen, leading to a 17.6% decrease in loading time. Locations with a high number of sites experienced even faster load times.
The permit processing system has been transformed as well. Previously, it took 15 minutes to process each wilderness permit manually. With Recreation.gov, the system can process 931 digital permits within the first hour of operations, saving approximately 5,000 staff hours per year. The public has embraced the new site, with over 45 million users, 9 million online transactions (including 1.5 million camping reservations), and 1.5 million downloads of the mobile app. These achievements have significantly improved the user experience, making Recreation.gov a one-stop shop for trip planning and reservations, on par with modern e-commerce experiences.
Through the innovative public-private partnership, the federal government has demonstrated the potential to collaborate with industry and leverage modern technologies to deliver meaningful services to citizens, all at no cost to the government. The success of Recreation.gov sets an example for enhancing public services through efficient and user-centric approaches.
