Renata Miskell is being honored in Category 6: Improving Government Efficiency for transforming how the federal government prevents fraud, waste, and improper payments while safeguarding trillions of dollars in public funds. With Treasury responsible for disbursing more than $6 trillion in mandatory payments annually, Renata led a fundamental shift from the traditional “pay and chase” approach toward proactively identifying and preventing improper payments before taxpayer dollars leave the government.

Renata developed and executed a whole-of-government payment integrity strategy that brings together policy, technology, data, and operations. She expanded data sharing across federal agencies and states, removed barriers to fraud-prevention tools, strengthened pre-payment verification, and increased access to authoritative datasets. Her leadership has also helped agencies make greater use of Treasury’s Do Not Pay program, giving employees better information to identify potential fraud and payment errors.

Under her leadership, Treasury helped agencies and states prevent and recover $11.7 billion in fraud and improper payments, a 38% increase over FY2024. Her reforms also identified 19 high-value datasets with the potential to prevent $28 billion in improper payments and produced a 174% increase in death-record matches, generating an estimated $330 million in projected savings over three years. By ensuring payments reach the right people, in the right amounts, at the right time, Renata is strengthening stewardship of taxpayer dollars while improving the accuracy, integrity, and trustworthiness of government services.
