Under the leadership of the Transformation Strategy Office and the Information Technology Enterprise Program Management Office Digitalization and Taxpayer Services Division Business Team, the Internal Revenue Services's (IRS) Digitalization Team is being recognized for achieving significant milestones in improving service delivery and efficiency.
The team's primary focus has been on driving unprecedented digitalization efforts within the IRS. They have prioritized digitizing existing forms, notices, and correspondence, as well as converting a large backlog of paper documents into digital formats. This transformation enabled the IRS to achieve the capability to digitally respond to all notices within just eight months, drastically reducing the need for physical mail submissions by over 94% from individual taxpayers.
Additionally, the Digitalization Team spearheaded the modernization of the IRS's scanning infrastructure, replacing outdated equipment and introducing automated mail-sorter machines at key locations. These upgrades streamlined the process of handling and processing mail, allowing the IRS to scan over 1.5 million forms in 2023 alone, including critical tax documents.
Moreover, the initiative includes developing modern, mobile-friendly formats for 20 priority non-tax forms by Filing Season 2025, facilitating easier submissions of up to 4 million additional tax documents electronically each year.
Overall, these efforts have transformed the taxpayer experience by making interactions with the IRS more efficient, accessible, and responsive through digital channels. The Digitalization Team's dedication and innovation have set a new standard for government agencies, demonstrating the power of digital transformation to enhance service delivery and improve the overall taxpayer experience.
