The Department of Defense (DoD), United States Government Publishing Office (GPO), the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), and representatives from across the Uniformed Services are being recognized for revolutionizing the process of renewing Uniformed Services Identification (USID) cards. This effort aimed to enhance the customer experience for active, retired, and disabled Uniformed Service Members and their families.
Before the Online USID Card Renewal capability was introduced as a pilot in February 2023, almost all USID cards were issued in-person at DoD ID card facilities, which could be inconvenient and time-consuming for cardholders. The new online capability allowed cardholders to renew their USID cards remotely, receive them by mail, and access benefits such as Commissary, Exchange, and healthcare services. Since its launch, over 60,000 USID cards have been issued through this online platform, with expectations to issue nearly 150,000 cards in calendar year 2024.
The benefits of this achievement are significant:
-
Convenience: Service members and their families save time and money by avoiding trips to physical DoD facilities and waiting in line.
-
Accessibility: The online renewal option expands access for all USID cardholders, including those with DoD Self-Service Logon, not just Active Duty members with Common Access Cards (CACs).
-
Efficiency: The process has been streamlined and improved, evidenced by a decrease in request failure rates from 20% initially to less than 4% since September 2023.
-
Scalability: The capability has been continuously improved based on user feedback, resulting in a significant increase in online requests since public communication efforts began in January 2024.
Overall, this initiative demonstrates a commitment to modernizing government services, enhancing customer satisfaction, and improving the overall experience for Uniformed Service members and their families.
