Craig Drake, Coordinating Director for Filing Season and Legislative Delivery at the IRS, is being honored in Category 6: Improving Government Efficiency for protecting taxpayers and maintaining reliable service during the complex 2026 Filing Season. Facing significant staffing shortages and a resurfaced legacy code defect that threatened nationwide processing, Craig coordinated rapid, cross-functional responses that stabilized critical systems, kept processing on schedule, and prevented disruptions that could have delayed refunds for millions of taxpayers.

 

When a data integrity incident put approximately 60,000 records at risk, Craig led the response that resolved the issue before incorrect taxpayer notices, refund delays, or audit consequences occurred—resulting in zero external taxpayer impact. Beyond crisis management, he raised early concerns about workforce attrition and contract continuity, ensuring senior leaders understood how operational risks could directly affect taxpayers and public trust.

Craig is also strengthening the IRS for future filing seasons. He championed more than 80 specialized training sessions to rebuild institutional knowledge lost through workforce attrition and sponsored an AI-driven modernization pilot to convert approximately 35,000–40,000 lines of legacy assembler code across 20 programs. By combining operational leadership, workforce development, and technology modernization, Craig has protected the integrity of the filing season while building a more resilient and reliable IRS for taxpayers.
