USPTO AUTOMATED SEARCH SYSTEM

Robin Jackson is being recognized for her efforts to transition the US Patent and Trademark Office to modern technology for searching for patent and trademark information.  Through Robin’s early experience and expertise with the massive IP classification system and her communications skills, she was able to help thousands of people make the transition to a more advanced system for research.  With this expertise, Robin became an instructor and continued to learn new systems and teach to long-term public researchers as well as novice users doing preliminary searching for their own ideas.  She continued to teach as the agency went paperless and assisted in the deployment of workstations for public use across regional offices.

Robin gives guided tours of the USPTO Public Search Facility in Alexandria, Virginia to acquaint visitors to the history of public Patent Searching since the beginning of the Patent Office which was opened up to the public in 1810.  Robin has provided tours to delegations from Japan and Senator Mark Warner of Virginia who is a member of the Patent Reform Bill Committee of 2011. Her tours are always well received with multiple compliments concerning her knowledge of the history of the Patent Office and her historical insight into public searching.

Recently, Robin was invited to present at the annual meeting of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM, formerly known as the Society of University Patent Administrators) in Washington, DC.  Her colorful presentation highlighted points of interest of the Public Search Facility and the history of searching at the Patent Office.  Her presentation was so well crafted and well received that it is now used routinely to introduce people to the USPTO service for searching innovation ideas and researching patents.

Having open and transparent access to the US Patent and Trademark building is critical to increase trust in government and continue to build upon the belief that the government is taking steps to be more innovative.
