DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
OFFICE OF THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION
Stephanie is the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the District of Columbia’s State Education Agency, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). During the past year, her leadership helped identify ways to support family access to benefits under multiple federal programs, grants, and legislative actions. This included working with District agencies to provide food for approximately 70,000 students through USDA's Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer program, as well as developing the system to coordinate with schools to identify almost 10,000 students to receive free internet service through the Mayor’s “Internet for All Initiative.”
Through Stephanie’s leadership, eligible schools, students, and families were able to reap the benefits of these increased federal benefits and to cover costs of emergency needs arising from the public health emergency without a corresponding increase in eligibility paperwork. In addition, her team developed an application to implement the District’s administration of the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Child Nutrition Programs (CNPs) throughout the District. As a result of Stephanie’s leadership, OSSE’s has been able to effectively continue conducting work remotely for Child Nutrition Programs. Through her work and the system, OSSE helped schools, childcare centers, shelters, adult centers, and many other organizations in the District that are responsible for feeding the community.
Additionally, Stephanie regularly leads school-focused sessions to ensure the best use of data and applications across the community. As a result of her work modernizing data processes, the District continued to modernize the collection of educational data and provide year-over-year trend analysis for various categories and other performance metrics for the District’s educational community. Stephanie’s data team has helped internal stakeholders and the Deputy Mayor for Education use the District’s education data to determine student counts and track changes over time. Her team’s work, conducting critical analysis and developing visualizations, was especially critical during the public health emergency to allow the District to use Data for decision-making.
Stephanie is a recognized leader across the agency, the District, and the national education community and forum sponsored by the US Department of Education. Through her leadership, the District has continued to serve our students before, during, and beyond this pandemic to meet the needs of its District community.
