PLAIN LANGUAGE ACTION AND INFORMATION NETWORK (PLAIN)

Since 2013, Katherine has co-chaired the Plain Language Action and Information Network (PLAIN), also known as the Plain Language Community of Practice (PL-COP) through GSA’s Digital.gov. As GSA’s Plain Language Launcher, Katherine teaches GSA teams to allow them to comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and improve their customer service.

She also provides cross-government online/virtual workshop sessions through Digital.gov. These classes allow people whose agencies lack a trainer to learn the plain language. During the current pandemic, she pivoted to training online, reaching over 1,000 attendees in two sessions.

She also represents PLAIN at various international conferences. Katherine uses connections developed through international plain language communities and conferences, social media linkages, and speakers from related conferences such as Confab and UXPA to invite speakers and share their knowledge. She also monitors the PLAIN listserv for topics and speakers that will interest the community.

She has boosted PLAIN’s presence and services to the federal community and thus helped them enhance their customer service to their customers.

Katherine's efforts go to bolstering the community's understanding of plain language, so their efforts in their agency reach those agency's customers/users/clients. With clearer communication, everyone benefits.
