In his role as Branch Chief of Website and Content Management, Cyrus McCormick has played a critical role in transforming the U.S. Department of Labor’s digital products and services. Cyrus led a partnership with the Office of Public Affairs to update DOL’s Content Management System for its public-facing websites into a new centralized system (Drupal).
The OneWeb initiative streamlined the DOL.gov end-user experience by implementing a consistent design and standardized labeling of information, providing a uniform content management structure, establishing Department-wide governance, and improving the overall security posture. Cyrus led 20 of the Department’s sub-agencies in their transitions to the new content management system, representing more than 220,000 web pages and document files. The transition streamlined business processes and provided a capability for DOL to offer more consistent and accurate information across multiple digital products and be more responsive to the needs of those requiring DOL’s services.
Cyrus’ leadership in making the OneWeb initiative a success lies in his service-oriented, collaborative actions. To facilitate the phased migrations for each sub-agency to the Drupal platform, Cyrus established a multi-agency working group to provide transparency for the team’s actions to stakeholders, to smoothly adhere to an Agile methodology for implementation, and to offer a forum for lessons learned. The OneWeb working group represents Cyrus’ dedication to ensuring the group participates inapplicable, engaging activities for its members. In 2020, Cyrus’ team managed the onboarding of 188 system users to Drupal, grew the attendance of working group members by 163%, and helped to process more than 1,000 support request tickets. Furthermore, Cyrus’ accomplishments established standardized labeling of information to structure the Department’s digital product, providing a Platform-as-a-Service to agencies, and aiding in compliance with federal mandates.
Cyrus’ effort resulted in an improved user experience for public citizens accessing Departmental resources and services, including items essential during the COVID-19 pandemic: searching for benefits through Benefits.gov’s Benefits Finder tool, guidance on filing for unemployment insurance, and tools for discovering apprenticeships and seasonal jobs. For his role in leading this vital, enterprise-wide OneWeb initiative, Cyrus has demonstrated the truest of commitments to public service.
